Holiday Home Waste Collection Cornwall
Want to know what happens to your holiday waste after collection?
0% to landfill, 100% recycling
Our very own recycling facility
For 20 years we have run a waste transfer and recycling facility on the beautiful Roseland Peninsular. Our site is a fully permitted site issued from the Environment Agency, we are licensed to receive and process a wide range of waste types here at our facility. Over the years we have tailored the site to suit the types of waste streams received. As our holiday let waste business has grown we have found the need to concentrate on this particular waste stream more, so we have invested heavily in machinery and employment to create the exciting possibilities derived from your waste. We can give you a "cradle to grave" journey of the waste generated from the holiday waste sector and we pride ourselves in being unique in this.
'"People on holiday sometimes like to relax with a drink"
9 tonnes of beer cans, 64 tonnes of glass bottles separated from waste collected from our customers in a season!
And we are capable of so much more...
Aluminium cans
These cans have been sorted from our waste streams via our mechanised picking line. Our line includes a magnet that collects all the other type of metal cans too. All cans are compacted and sent off to be smelted and reused.
Glass bottles
Glass bottles of all shapes and colours are separated from the waste via our mechanised picking line, they will be stored and then crushed on site down to a fine sand, we can then use the glass sand in the production process of our concrete lego blocks!!!
Glass crusher
For years we sent our glass away to be reprocessed by a third party we were happy knowing that our separation of this material was beneficial to the world. We have decided to purchase a crushing machine ourselves because we produce concrete lego blocks and after much research realised that the glass sand can be used in concrete production.
Concrete lego blocks
These are the concrete lego blocks that we produce here on site, they have a range of uses from sea defence's to retaining walls and now will be produced using crushed glass that we separate out from holiday home waste. last year we manufactured and sold 379 lego blocks, each block contains approx 2 tonnes of aggregate (size depending) of which 1 tonne would be glass sand. 100% glass recycled right here on site.
Scrap cable
Its surprising what ends up in the bin, our magnet on the picking line automatically separates cable and wire from the mixed waste in to its own pile. We send this off to a third party for smelting.
Mixed metals
We have had our fair share of deck chairs and sun loungers in our time, its a difficult waste to manage as the textile material needs to be separated from the metal frames.
Energy from waste (EFW)
Once the waste has been through a number of our process's there is inevitably a fraction of waste remains that we can literally do nothing with. We then shred this material to the required size and supply it to one of 2 EFW plants near us. these purpose built facilities are state of the art plants both less than 5 years old. With the new technology they are able to vaporise this material and turn the waste into electric and feed back to the grid, All this is done with near zero carbon emissions.
Mixed Wood
We separate out wood from waste streams and shred down to 150mm size particle, we then send this material away to be remade in to kitchen tops, chip boards and other wood products.
Weighbridge
We know exactly how much waste we receive and how much processed material we send out as everything passes over our Weighbridge, we are accurate to 20kgs!
Meet the machines
"To separate waste and recycle efficiently you need a permitted site and a mix of good people and machines"
Bogen the Handler
Bogen is one of our favourite machines it's used to load "Satan the shredder" and the high sided trucks that come in daily to collect from us. With a rising cab that means the operator can have a good view of all his surroundings its perfect for what we need. It's also used in the waste separation process pre shredding.
Donald the Dumper
Donald is used to load and carry the larger element of waste from the sorting process and ferry them to the relevant bay for further processing, think of Donald as a very large wheel barrow.
Satan the Shredder
Satan is a pretty nasty machine, we use it to shred waste materials down to an acceptable particle size ready for either further processing or EFW use, a 350hp Cat engine drives two large shafts that operate in tandem to grinds, cut and shred any type of waste that its fed. There is also a magnet on the extraction belt that removes metals as they travel upon the belt. Here we see Bogen & Satan working together
The Picking Station
The picking line does not have a name, we don't know why it just never has, anyway the picking line is used in manual separation of the waste. Fed by either Tersa or Terry with holiday waste primarily, the material travels up the conveyor and into the enclosed section where staff pick out the recoverable material and drop in to chutes that leads to bins below to be processed later. There is a magnet moving at the end of the line that grabs all the metals as they pass under leaving non recoverable waste to fall off the end into the EFW bay(Energy from waste).
Sally the sweeper
Not the most glamorous of machines but really essential to what we do, cleaning up after ourselves is something we do at the end of everyday. Even though we are a waste transfer and recycling facility we like to keep everything organised and clean as we have high standards. Mother Teresa or Terry are the guys that cop this daily job.
Larry the Loader
Larry is semi retired these days due to his age. We do get him out weekly just to keep up his morale and ensure he won't seize up, even though he's semi retired he still loads trucks really well due to his high tip capability.
Terry the Telehandler
Terry is one of two machines of this type that we operate along with his Mother "Teresa" these machine help in the manual sorting process, they also load the picking line and clean the yard, they are the dogs bodies of the operation.
Teresa the Telehandler
The Mother of Terry, Teresa does a lot of the running around and cleaning up after Terry most of the day, The mother & Son team are the beating heart of the operation.
Ferris the Fastrac
Not exactly used in our holiday home waste operation, used more on our waste soils division but everybody loves a Fastrac and thats why its got a place here!
